Some of them were widowers. Thomas Jefferson, although he had been married was not married as president as his wife Martha had died by then. The only batchelor president was James Buchanan. Martha Washington out lived George and it was Abraham Lincoln who had temporarily sent his wife to a funny farm. Her son had her committed for most of the rest of her life. She lost her youngest son to disease, a son in the war and her husband to an assassin all within a few years.

One. I forget his name but his niece did the official duties of the First Lady, like host parties and the like. No, Martha Washington did not die while George was in office. I believe that Lincoln's wife wasn't "locked away" until Lincoln was assassinated.

James Buchanan is the only bachelor that was president (15th) of the U.S. When he became the first bachelor President, various rumors circulated in Washington society about the unusual situation. One tale told the story of a youthful Buchanan who had vowed never to marry when a misunderstanding with his fiancée caused her suicide. Another more persistent account cited Buchanan's longtime relationship with the also unmarried Senator William Rufus Devane King from Alabama. The two had lived together in Washington for sixteen years, and letters between them indicate that Buchanan and King had, at the very least, shared a deep friendship.
In any event, Buchanan was without a wife but not at a loss for female companionship. He surrounded himself with the wives of his friends and political advisers and contented himself with the company of his ward and niece, Harriet Lane. "Nunc," as Harriet referred to him, had educated his niece about the importance of politics, discussing political issues with her. When James Buchanan became President, he asked Harriet to assume the duties of presidential hostess.
During Buchanan's administration (1857) the country suffered a short but severe economic depression. The most important issue during Buchanan's presidency was the growing division between the North and the South over slavery.
As for Martha Washington, in 1797 the Washingtons said farewell to public life and returned to their beloved Mount Vernon, to live surrounded by kinfolk, friends, and a constant stream of guests eager to pay their respects to the celebrated couple. Martha's daughter Patsy had died, her son Jack at 26, but Jack's children figured in the household. After George Washington died in 1799, Martha assured a final privacy by burning their letters; she died of "severe fever" on May 22, 1802. Both lie buried at Mount Vernon, where Washington himself had planned an unpretentious tomb for them.
Regarding the Lincolns, during the summer of 1848 Mary & Abraham Lincoln, along with Robert and Eddie, their sons, traveled through New York State, visited Niagara Falls, and took a steamer from Buffalo across the Great Lakes. Mary did not return with Abraham to Washington for the 2nd session of the Thirtieth Congress. She and the boys stayed in Springfield. In 1849, Abraham's term in the House ended, and his political career stalled. The Lincolns once again were together in Springfield. Mary's father, Robert Smith Todd, died July 16 apparently of cholera.
I hope this clears those “rumors”.
