I knew mine because it was the animal that I felt the most affinity to. Ever since I was little I loved elephants. Never knew what it was but I started collecting them and as I got older and studied them more I have such respect for them. They are very maternal and that's how I am with all my friends' kids. I found out when I was about 17 that my great gram also collected elephants. Weird.

It's quite possible that cats could be your spirit animal. If you've always had an affinity with them and felt as if they are a part of you and you are a part of them, I would say it's likely. As for what it means, that's kinda something you have to discover for yourself. Research cats and their history, research their habits and tendencies, their behavior. Why do you like them? What is it that draws you to them? Can you see yourself as a cat? What is the one main trait that you attribute to cats? Do you see that attribute in yourself?? Ask yourself these questions and see what you come up with. Good luck on your journey of self discovery!

To honor and respect all Spirit’s that travel with all that are of what is, the two legged, the four legged and all that are a part of what is seen. All co-exists with the Spirit that is of Creator, therefore all is of Creator. Therefore all Spirit’s can and do communicate when summoned to make the Spirit stronger.
The Indigenous people of the America’s through all time have lived with the strength of many Spirit’s of the animal form that gives strength to the person or a clan that has identified as such. What a wonderful time to live in harmony spiritually with more then the human form.
It is of what can be found and understood for all is of the Spirit of Creator. The magnitude of what is and has been continues to be real if found through seeking. Look at all that is identified by your senses and you will discover that even the water that flows speaks if one can decipher with what one can understand of the honor to find what is.

Usually an elder to shaman type person will identify your spirit guide. However, depending on how much you need them, they will reveal themselves to you in many ways. Myself I have a Blue Whale as a Spirit Guide. Any time I'm really troubled I dream of them and its always a dream that gives me direction. I see them when feel really troubled (I'm from the Atlantic Coast) even when its not the right season for them to be around...

Its not the animal you like the most, as is oddly enough demonstrated in the movie Brother Bear (Disney actually got SOMETHING right). However, you will often have characteristics of the animal yourself.

I've also had three blues stop and make eye contact with me, it was brief each time. But they seem to recognize me as special the same way I saw them...

And yes, Spirit guides do exist in the majority of Native American Cultures. And have for centuries. These are groups of people who realised that nature was a balance and that most animals are smarter and more well adapted than we are... They respect(ed) nature and its creatures.... its not new age nor a sell out. Though some people will profit from it.

Are there any particular animals you dream of?
Your spirit animal is usually an animal that you feel a close contact with - or something about an animal that resonates within your being.
What animals do you have in your house or room?
Have you ever had a close call with a particular animal?
Is there one that has chosen you or chosen to visit you occasionaly? Your spirit animal will usually seek you out at some point in your life - just wait and watch.

I will give you a couple of sites before telling a few things.

http://www.crystalinks.com/totemanimals.html

First off a Totem or power animal is a spirit that advises you threw life. If you feel a bond toward an animal, more than likely that is one of your totem animals.
Most are also not aware that a totem animal also has a positive lesson/teaching as well as a negative side.
Some Tribes of the native American believe you have more than one and some say you have as many as 7.
If you know how to meditate, you should be able to find out who your helpers are that way on your own.
My advise tho is, why pay for a service when it is available for you to find out on your own, if you are willing to do the work.
As stated above there are many books and web pages on the subject.
Trust your own inner voice, and feelings !!!
Not all totem/power animals are of present day earth, or of this reality.
Could go on and on; on this subject but will leave as is.
Also remember different Nations (tribes) apply different meanings to animals.
Good Luck and May the White Buffalo Walk with you in your journey, and the Hawk bring you many messages

I went to a shaman in the S.F.Bay area .
I think you could find a shaman in most modern cities, If you are near an indian reservation that would be the place to go. Not cheap, though, I paid $80.seven years ago. Had a beautiful ceremony. I have two spirit guides; the owl and the wolf. I know people will have a royal laugh at this but the owl was sent out to retrieve peices of my soul that had been left behind due to trauma. The wolf guides and tries to guard me.

Hello, I am a Lakota Sioux Indian and my kin believe that their are totem animals that guide us in our life journey. If you have an affinity for cats, which I also do, they give what is called "medicine" or help/guidance in times of need. There are also totem animals that are represented in books that are strictly written about totem animals that are helpful.

My advice is to go to a search engine and keyword totem animals and learn a bit about it...It is an amazing thing to see your totem animal when you call on them. I was born under the sign of the bear, there are various clans and polar opposites to the totem animal that you also may learn from...The polar opposite of your totem teaches, for example, my totem being the bear has the opposite of the mouse...Two very different animals both in size and medicine but as a bear person, I learn from the mouse...

There is a great abundance of books and sites, remember look for totem animals or animal guides....Hope this helps!

Yes, if you've always loved cats you very likely have a feline totem. But remember, you can have more than one. If you ever dreamt about turning into or living among some kind of animal, that may also be a totem.

Go with the meditation. Try a holistic store and see if they carry music that aids in the meditation to seek your animal spirit.
On Delphi forums there is a forum where the host helps you with spirit animals.

I think that stuff is kinda more New Age then it is Native (and new age loves to take and distort Native cultural things)...sorry.

Do not pay anyone money for any of that "shaman" garbage, unless you have no problem with disrespecting cultures and playing with fakes (even if someone is Native, "sell outs" exist). Their cultures should not be for sale and cheapened that way, at least as far as I am told by people within it.
