My dog, lab, rot and great dane mix, weighs 190 lbs and is 3 years old. The vet assures me he is not over weight but i'll need to watch for problems with his hips as he gets older. I know about hip displasia but what I need to know is how to prevent it. So here is my question: Does anyone know what measures I should take to keep him from suffering hip problems? (I already understand that excersice is important)

Definitely keeping him at a good weight is the #1 thing to help prevent the arthritis problems related to hip dysplasia.

Give supplements with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate.

Watch when he runs: if he runs and both hind legs hit the ground at the same time (called "bunny hopping") you should let your vet know. This is indication that his hips hurt and he needs some antiinflamatories for the pain.

Sounds like a cool mix, I bet he is gorgeous! Good luck

Watch how he sits. When our dog sits "lazy leg" we correct her, because it puts more strain on their hips. This is where the dog sits with one leg out to the side.
