It actually depends on the lie.
Perjury is a deliberate false statement made under oath about a material matter.
Say the witness to a traffic accident, a gray haired lady on Social Security, was asked her age under oath and she answered quite firmly "35". That's not perjury because it has absolutely no bearing on the case at hand.
However, actual perjury is a very serious thing, and usually carries a stiffer penalty than the case actually being decided.

If you are caught, you can go to jail for committing perjury. Remember Lil Kim? That is what happened to her. She served 1 year and 1 day and was out on 3 years on probation. I do not think she would recommend doing that.

if it is a normal person..they will be charged with PERJURY and go to jail if it is proven.
If your name Is Bill Clinton...you get the Democ RATS coming to your defense and although charged they get you off without prison.
