I love Stephen King books, and I think one of his best books is The Stand. I also found a copy of The Notebook laying around, read it, and was fighting back the tears by the end.

'1984' by George Orwell (or anything by George Orwell). On a surface level he accurately saw the totalitarian regimes of the 1940s and predicted those of the 50s, and on a deeper level his depiction of governments controlling language to force us to see issues their way foresaw the spin doctoring that is now everywhere in every party. His spirited defence of independent thinking and depiction of beauty in simple pleasures is very moving.

It is the only book you need to read to understand modern politics.
