Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

Well in almost all communities, your internet is literally plugged into some box on or near your street. When everyone plugged into that box try to max out their internet connections you may experience some slower internet. As for your computer, it does have something to do with it. Your web browser has to load, and your computer runs it. Viruses can also slow down your computer and take up a lot of your internet connection, making it appear slow

Using registry cleaner can fix your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there are some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically! It even can speed up your computer by 300% or more!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

you just don't sound like you can handle that cleanup job. take it to trained people like me and pay a few bucks and some instructions on how to minimize the everpresent risk. this will happen again. you need to take a couple of night courses to do these things. would you really go into your car tonight and work on the ignition system because you care seem sluggish? forget about the legendary geeks who instinctive hacked and built and did all these incredible things. ignore ncis and strartrek geeks. they aren't real. you learn how to fix tvs and stuff like that. unless you dad or uncle teaches you, go to school or let me do it for say $75.

We need to know the processor speed..the amount of RAM you have...the amount of Memory used.....if you are worried about a virus, go to Trend Micros web site and run Housecall. It will clear it all up...You may just need to run Disk Defrag and disk Cleanup (2) times a week....try that and the antivirus and you'll be up to speed

Well . realy the computer performance and system speed marely depends on how much hard disk space is used ...it rather depends on the hardware package of your system..first it have to be certain that whether your and your friend's pc constitute of the same hardware or not..like processor and physical memory or RAM predominently....you wanted to know whether your system is infected or not.. if you have already installed a potential anti-virus and anti-spyware package and it is up to date and automatic scheduled scan enabled then the chance of getting infected is lower.. if u have not installed a potential anti-virus and anti-spyware package..then i willrecommend you to download and install it. But i will not specifically emphasise on a single product as previous answerer did. I mentioned the following packages:
1.AVG internet security suite 2007 (from www. grisoft .com)
(30 days free trial)
2.McAfee internet security suite 2007 from (www.mcafee.com (30 days free trial)
3.Zone Alarm internet security suite 2007 from www.zone lab .com (30 days free trial)
4. AVS Internet security suite 2007 (30 days free trial)
5.CA (Computer associate ) internet security suite2007 (30 days free trial)
download one of them , run update and install and then run full scan.. if there any infection, will be detected and repaired thereby . If one's trial period expires you can down load and install others
To optimize pc speed, internet surfing/ downloading speed you can down load some windows utility power tools software like..1.Dr. Salman's windows power tools (7 days trial) 2.Tune Up utilities 2007 ( 30 days trial)..etc
you can down load and try one of them..
you also have to defragment your hard disk to smartly place your files so that system runs smoothly and system startup speed increases using a powerful sophisticated disk defragmentor named "perfect disk 8.0" (30 days trial) from www.raxco.com.
