Why would the Oilers pull a stupid move and trade their captain????? And to the Islander's of all teams? If they don't make the playoffs it could go down as one of the worst trades of all times! Remember Gretzky?

I doubt they would have made the playoffs anyways. Also, Ryan Smyth is a free agent at the end of the season; there is a possibility that he would have left anyways. The Oilers will be in a better position in the offseason than they would have been because they gained what the Islanders gave them in the trade and they still have a chance to re-sign Smyth. They received two players and a first round pick for a rental. Even though they gave up their (already slim) chances for the present season, I think, over the long term, it is a good deal

The oilers traded Ryan Smith because they could get a bunch of prospects for a free agent who would potentially leave. Considering how he cried when he was told he was traded there is the possibility that he could in fact return to the team next year. If that is the case then it essentially becomes a great deal for the Oilers in that that they got some credible potential players for nothing. The likelihood that they would make the playoffs and have a run like last year was tenuous at best, so they are planning for next year and beyond. I think long term it was a good move for them.

the big problem with the Oilers is in the off season they gave big contracts to players such as Horcoff, Pisani and a few more and at the end they didn't have the money to re-sign him which was a big mistake as hes clearly been there best player for years.
