Experienced marine fishkeepers, please help! I just bought a Antennata Lionfish. He was feed a guppy while I was at LFS and was said to eat frozen food voraciously as well. What is the best type of food to feed? I live in a very rural area and do not have convenient access to live food (maybe weekly) and then it would mostly be guppies, ghost shrimp and goldfish. How often and what would you suggest? Thanks a bunch!!!!

I agree with MM here. Feed him guppies for now, or continue to do so. Guppies can live in salt water and are relatively inexpensive. I would suggest getting around 20 feeder guppies and put them into your salt tank. They will breed and your fish will have dinner whenever he wants to. Black mollies also are a good choice to add to the salt water. 2 females and 1 male will also provide fresh live food.

Shrimp really of any kind frozen and thawed will work well. You may come to find, frozen fish shrimp is more expensive than the people shrimp. I fed mine regular people sea food. Pieces of shrimp, calamari, octapi what ever I bought for me, I also cut up for him. Depending on his size, brine shrimp may or may not work. Once Lions get large, they for some reason just stop eating the small brine. you can also attempt pellets for omnivors, I say this only because your fish really should have a form of veggie for digestion. Remember these fish eat other fish and crustrations which eat veggies.

If he will eat the frozen and/or pellets that is great. give him the live then weekly or when you can get it.

Cool fish!

I would suggest for the next few weeks you stick with what the shop was feeding him. That will help him get comfortable your tank. Ask the shop what frozen foods they were feeding, odds are it's good for the Lionfish. These guys eat mainly crustaceans in the wild so things like small fish and shrimp would be a good frozen food. I would go for fish fillets and shrimp from the grocery and freeze it in feeding sized portions personally.

you should try frozen krill or silversides it should eat that otherwise go with small mollies(they can live in saltwater), or ghost shrimp.
