This is fascinating! Can anyone elaborate on how female great apes handle mestruation when it occurs? What about those in zoos, how do they handle it? Differently than those in the wild? How do males treat them? Any references on the topic would be great as well-

They have oestrous (NOT gestation) cycles, which is slightly different to a menstrual cycle. They come every 30 or so days, much like humans, and last approx. 4 days. the males become very frisky and harass the females endlessly, the females become flirty. its fasinating and funny to watch! there is not a heavy amount of blood like humans, but when cleaning the enclosure out it is noticible.

Have a look at this link from Jersey Zoo, its got lots of info on W.L.Gorilla

As with all animals in the wild or in zoos they just let it go where it may. Males smell the cycle and want to breed at these times.
It is called the gestation cycle.

Deal with it? Probably with lots of chocolate. If the males were smart, they would just back off and tread lightly.

female gets bit**y, male gets exicted, female gets annoyed, male gets pushy till he gets his way, female is a bi**h the rest of the time....pretty much what happens to humans.

All mammals get periods. They just wash themselves more often. Show dogs get special maxi pads.
