Get a red eared slider. about $15. The tank can be anywhere from $15-$50 for a cheap tank. the food is about $6 but last for a month or two. the rocks or sand can be up to $11 but dont need to be replaced that often.

other things you need are...
a heat lamp $25
a rock so the turtle can sun itsself $7
a pump to circulate the water $20-$30
water pump filters $15 (every month or two)

I would advise that you don't get a red eared slider unless you want to spend a lot of money on a set up. RES can get very big! Look into getting a texas map turtle or a southern painted. Mud/musk turtles are even smaller, but may not be what imagine when you think "turtle".

They say you need about 10 gallons for each inch of turtle as a MINIMUM requirement. It's better to have even more space. My advice is to buy an aquarium to fit your turtle's adult size since he or she will grow quickly and constant upgrades can get expensive.

You will also need a good filter. Turtles are messy and you generally need 3X as much filter as you would for fish. In other words, if you have a 50 gallon tank, you need a filter for 150 gallons.

Sand and turtles generally don't mix. Large river stones or nothing are the best choices. Gravel is also a bad idea since your turtle may eat it.

Food is the least expensive thing you'll need for your turtle.

Your turtle will need a heater. I like the visitherm stealth heaters.

Your turtle will need a basking area along with a heat and UV light. Not all lights are created equally. I've done my homework and buy mine from reptileuv.com.

Here is a GREAT article about choosing your first water turtle. It should really help you understand what's out there and what turtle is right for you.

I saw a tank at a pet staro for 30 and they also had a kit for 35. It was a turtle accessory kit. I'm not positive on the price of turtles though....sorry. I think you can get a painted water turtle for about 20. Hope this helps.

check local animal shelters for water turtles. I know the one i volunteer for has a lot of them.. tank and the accessories just depends on where you get them. Just look around on the web and in stores before buying anything.. the red eared sliders at the shelter are only like $5..

um tank depends on the size but i would start at a 50 gallon then update as needed food is around like 7 bucks for pellets

dont use sand its a hard substrate to clean so just use a glass bottom
