My wife changed her first name since we got married but she kept her last name. She joked that she wants to keep her last name incase we get a divorce. But we have been married for 10 years with 2 kids.

Our kids has my last name. It would be nice if everyone in the family has the same last name.

Because they don't want to.
They may have estabished an extensive contact list for personal or professional networking, and changing the name would make communication with all those people very difficult.

Or, they may just like the name they were born with and want to keep it.

What's the big deal?

It is our right as a woman to make that decision. I never took my first husband last name and I will not take my soon to be second husbands. And before you think O her first marriage failed because of lack of commitment no he died in a car accident. Women should have that right it is just a tradition and traditions are ment to be broken. Not everything stays the same men. Women have every right you do. Why don't men take the womens last name is it because they think men wear the pants thats why....Well I will tell you this in my household its 50 50 I am the the bread winner I make the money he is a stay at home dad. Roles are reversed since the 60's. It doesn't mean a women doesn't love you if they don't take your last name, some are professional reasons, traditional reasons, and some women feel that taking a mans name takes away their individuality and independence.

what do you mean she changed her first name?
I wanted to keep my maiden name because there are no male heirs in my family and after me there will be no more "jones" I did take my husbands last name but i use both names with no hyphen, maria jones smith, most people say ms smith which is ok but some say ms jones smith also ok with me. Why don' t you talk to your wife about her reasons. Also just curious why it bothers you. Also what last name do you children have?

I kept my last name but I do hyphen it. I did it for personal reasons that really had nothing to do with my husbands family. (He does not feel disrespected) I was told that the"smith" family would never amount to anything...well it has, and it started with me. I heard this saying as a child and it has stuck with me forever. It made me want to be a better person and give 110%. Some families have a bad rep to beat.

My aunt, who is a doctor, didn't change her last name. It might be for legal reasons.
What I find unusual is when a woman doesn't go back to her maiden name after she gets divorced.

Because the woman being expected to take the man's name is an outdated and sexist concept. In my case, I kept my name because, well... it's my name.

Business reasons. For example a realestate agent who is known by a certain name and has all signs , business cards etc already printed in their name.

There are other reasons I'm sure but that is one that comes to mind
