When you download an item that needs a mesh, you must first download and install the mesh, and then download and install the actual item. The website you use to download (whether it's thesims2.ea.com or mts or tsr should have instructions on how to install.) If you're downloading from the exchange, download to My Computer/USERNAME/My documents/Ea Games/Sims 2/downloads. (or something along those lines, theres a download folder in the sims 2 folder in the ea folder in your documents. Open what you've downloaded. A blue screen will pop up saying install or cancel. Click install, and it should be in your game next time you open it. If you download from thesimsresource most of them install like that too, but I suggest installing to a folder you make on your desktop. That way if you download bad cc it will be easier to find. I hope that answered your first questions.

Body shop is used to create clothing and genetics (hair, makeup, eye colors, skin colors, etc). It's not at all like the create a family screen you're talking about. Go to thesims2.ea.com and search the uploaded stories for a body shop tuitorial. Make sure you change the order to highest rated. That's how I learned how to use it. I only do clothes though so far. There's a good one by S2FrEK for clothes.
I hope I helped!! Good luck and happy simming!!!

Hi, there's some great tutorials on the Mod The Sims 2 site if you're still having problems:

http://www.modthesims2.com/

If you click where it says 'create' then you should find the tutorials.
