I would have to vote for Martina Navratilova. She was such a comprehensive player! She won Grand Slam singles titles on every surface, as well as over 150 each of singles and doubles tour titles, showing her versatility as a singles or doubles player.

Steffi Graf may have won more singles Slams, but she didn't have a career Grand Slam in singles, doubles, and mixed!!!! To top it all off, Navratilova won her last mixed doubles Slam at the age of 49, in the final tournament of her career! I call THAT tennis skill.

If you're talking about achievements... Steffi Graf it is... She has won 22 Grand Slams... 7 Wimbly, 6 FO, 5 USO, 4 AO... Plus 5 WTA CHAMPIONSHIPS, a Singles Gold Medal, a Singles Silver Medal, a Doubles Wimbledon crown and a Doubles Bronze Medal... what a career!!!! 18 Tier 1 trophies and 107 tournament wins all in all... :D Although Margaret Court has won 24 Grand Slams, her career was before the Open Era and at that time, Grand Slams were only for Amateurs... so no one has ever match Graf! :D During this era, I think Serena, although very inconsistent and not that dedicated to the sport, is the best female player, she has won 14 GS, 2 Championships and a Doubles Gold Medal... her career is pretty complete... but she is almost retiring I think... Talking about right here and now... I should say Sharapova probably is the most complete female player, these days.. Career Slam, and a Championships, she is pretty much complete. :D

Martina Navratalova was the greatest of all time. She certainly had the longest career ever. Billie J gets props for her career and battle of the sexes thereby starting Title 9 and all things womens sports, but Martina dominated for almost three decades! She still is one of the top doubles players in the world now and shes almost 50. Steffi could have been but had no backhand and basically won a lot of majors because a crazed countryman stabbed her only competition (who had started to dominate her, and thats Hingis).

It's a matter of opinion and it's between:

1) Billie Jean King (old-school)
2) Steffi Graf (she won so much)
3) Martina Hingis (only for being the youngest)
4) Williams sisters

I think it would be Steffi.

I don't see how anyone could say anything but Martina Navratalova. She brought power to the game, and completely dominated the sport until she started aging, and Graf came along.
