i think this was on the discovery channel . it is assumed that light is the by-product of something faster (don't quiet remember what it was called) and when it slows down light is formed.

What on the surface appears to be a simple question is in fact quite an interesting one. It's true that nothing can travel faster than the "speed of light", but traveling faster than "light speed", now there's the rub. By utilizing a worm hole (natural or space ship created), one could theoretically take a short cut through space, even though you're traveling less than the speed of light, and still arrive at your destination before light could if it were traveling in a straight line in the same direction that you were going. Kind of like taking a short cut across a large open field walking while someone else ran around the perimeter. Even though they were moving faster in a straight line, you still would get to your destination sooner.

Currently there are several theories that could lead to man made faster then light travel; one being traveling via a wormhole by literally punching a hole through the fabric of time and space.However there is no known naturally occurring phenomenon that can go faster then the speed of light; however you should remember that 60 years ago going faster then the speed of sound was considered impossible. Our species is just beginning to step out of the cradle and go to the stars; in time we will find things that shatter our delusions of what makes the universe work and the limitations our ignorance has placed upon it.

Scientists have been able to slow a light pulse going through a bose-einstein condosate to just a few feet per minute. So there are lots of things faster than the speed of light, depending on the context.

The Theory of Relativity clearly states that, as an object approaches the speed of light, it's mass increases, until, when it reaches the velocity of the speed of light, it's mass would be infinite.

This theory has been proven by several particle accellerators around the world which have measured the mass of particles as they are accellerated toward the speed of light. Figures returned of these experiments match what is predicted by the equation.

There are theoretical particles, which have never been observed, called tachyons. Tachyons are interesting because they don't have normal mass, their mass is "imaginary" -- a product of i, the square root of minus one.

This has weird implications. It means that as a tachyon moves faster, its kinetic energy DROPS. In fact, it's no more possible for a tachyon to fly SLOWER than the speed of light than it is possible for regular massive objects to travel FASTER than light.

Neither tachyons nor regular massive objects can travel the speed of light. That's only possible for objects that have exactly zero rest mass.

do you believe in the theory of the speed of dark? the universe is darkness and it has to be moving if the universe is expanding. I believe the speed of dark is faster than the speed of light
