i just got this heater from my local fish store for my 2.5G betta tank and its working great!
http://www.everythingforpets.com/elite_mini_submersible_aquarium_heater.pet/use.id.5.item_id.7930.dept.1176/
(this is just the first site i found the right brand and picture of the thing...i don't know anything about this website)
anyway, its adjustable so you can keep it really low and it won't overheat a tiny tank.
i bought one before this one that wasn't adjustable (i really wasn't thinking) and ran it in the 2.5G for about 12 hours. i finally took it out when the water got so hot it was off the thermometer register (no fish in the tank, by the way! its good to test your equipment in a tank without fish if you can due to this very reason.) this new heater has kept the water a steady 77 F since i've put it in there.

hope it helps.

I dont's use a heater in my 2 gal, but there is a light on the hood. the light heats the water enough for the betta. Just keep your betta in a warm place away from direct sun as alage will grow there. Just make sure that you do partial water changes like once a week. i also reccomend putting asnail in the tank too. they will help clean the waste up.

i have a betta in a 5 gallonwith no heater. i have a heater that fits 2-5 gallons. it was like 12 dollars at my pet store. but the light keeps my water warm enough. so i dont use it. i think the heater is like a 25 watt. hope this helps

2.5 is the smallest they make heaters for, and using it on a 2gallon is risking frying your betta :/ glad you're trying to give him great care though!
here's a link to a cheap one for a 2.5gal anyway:

*to clear up what is said bellow, because I don't want you to fry your betta, 25watt is for no smaller than a 5gallon. 7.5watt is for no smaller than a 2.5gallon...
