Hi I just purchased 2 bettas last week. One is perfectly fine but I noticed verticle slits appearing in the other one's belly fin and I just saw that he has a large knotch taken out of his tail, he's a rounded tail betta so it's pretty noticable. I'm not sure if it's 1. him just being stressed with the move or 2. possible fin rot. I've never owned any fish before so I really have no idea. From what I can see it doesn't have any strange discoloration but he's a black betta. I just moved him to another temprorary tank and am not sure if I should just move the other fish back to the old tank to reduce his stress. I really don't want it to be fin rot because i think that he's very pretty. He's black but has a blue sheen and a few red spots. Can any one with more experience help me out?

Both of them are separated.

This fish has the same body type as mine. I plan on asking the shop about it tomorrow. He has no other tank mates.

I have heard that bettas do shread their own fins and I just want to make sure that it wasn't something to be worried about.

Since you just got them a week ago I have to assume you have them in nice new tanks (hopefully not bowls) Splits like you discribe can happen for many reasons one of which is high ammonia levels in the tank. This is almost always the case with a new tank. A new tank with a fish will have ammonia build up. To prevent it from becomeing a problem, change about 50% of the water every other day for the next 2 weeks. After that about 25% of the water once a week.

I really love bettas and breed blacks myself. I would love to see a picture of yours if you can manage one and post it to a hosting site like photobucket.com or email me one to magicman116@yahoo.com

Hope that helps and by the way, the fin damage will grow back in time.

you might have a crown type beta. I've seen some photos of these and they seem to have multiple slits, which often look like it has been fighting, but they're actually how the fins grow. I'll find a link and post it. Now it may have fought with another betta at one time, but I believe those fins regrow. If he seems active, then I'm sure he's healthy and fine. I used to have bettas a long time ago and they're pretty neat fish.

I have kept bettas before and am not sure what this is. did you take him back to the store to show them to ask them what they thought, they may have som sort of health gurantee.

Is this betta alone or in a tank with other fish?If it is with other fish there could be a fish nipping his fins.

Definitely keep them separated. I had a betta that was by itself in its tank, and it's fin did the same thing. They are beautiful creatures, but apparently hard to keep that way. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. ;)

They are fighting fish, so will beat each other up, keep them apart.
