I figured maybe it's because of the size, but they make external hard drives that can fit in your palm. It really baffles me that a 2 gig flash drives cost $70 when you could buy a 60 gigabyte external hardrive for the same price or less.

Exactly! It's the size and portability of the device. People like small devices. I would rather get the 60 GB drive myself. 2 GB is nothing anymore.

its mostly for marketing purposes - they can't keep all the 2 gig flash drives at 20 - 30 bucks each week so they alternate. As well the cheaper you go with the external hard drives the less reliable it is - i wouldn't spend below a hundred dollars on one.

Flash Drives can be carried everywhere, more mobile, can fit in pockets, as oppose to lugging a giant 3.5 inch drive with a USB cord and power outlet. No power outlet, then it can't be use.
However, the best one to get is a 2.5 inch drive. There bigger, than flash drives but smaller than 3.5 inch drives, may fit in big pockets, have lots of space and does not need a power outlet. It only needs a USB cable to connect to a computer.

However, why would you get a 2GB flash drive for $70? I got mine about 6+ months ago for about $45, with tax and shipping.

First off, the technology is different, the fact that the USB things are a different storage type than a harddrive. The other thing your paying for is the portability and the miniaturization of the drive.

Because flash memory is a lot more expensive than a hard drive.

It has benefits like being unaffected by knocks and power outages and being faster.
