The invention of Chapstick of course coincided with the industrial revolution. The increase of pollutants in the everyday lives of people led people getting dry, chapped lips. Prior to this humans never experienced lip chapping, but this was also due in part to a much healthier diet.

I'm old enough to know that it was vaseline.
Vaseline still works, but I like chapstick.
Nowadays a whole industry revolves around moisturizers
