How can you tell how far lightning is just by how long the time between the lightning and the thunder. If it is possible, can you tell me how I can figure it out?

Yes, you can use thunder to tell how far away a storm is. Next time you see a storm, if you count the number of seconds between when you see the lightning and hear the thunder and divide the number by 5-it will tell you how far away the storm is in miles.

When you see the lightning flash, count the number of seconds until you hear the thunder. Divide the seconds by 5 for the distance (..in miles..) to the lightning strike.

The speed of sound is about 1/5 mile per second, so the rule of thumb is 5 seconds for every mile.
