You should be taking prenatal vitamins which can be found in any pharmacy or drug store. You should also be eating a well balanced diet from all of the food groups. However, there are foods to avoid, such as, fish high in mercury and foods containing caffeine.
You should buy a pregnancy book that outlines a well balanced diet and explains what is in a good prenatal vitamin.
The book "what to expect when you're expecting" does this.
Take care and congrats.

In addition to a prenatal vitamin, it is now recommended that pregnant/breastfeeding women take DHA (Omega 3). It aids in the developement of the brain and vision in the baby. There are studies that show that babies born to mothers that take this supplement are more alert and even a bit more advanced than babies who aren't. There is a brand called Expecta (I think it is made by Stuart Natal). It is sold near prenatal vitamins at your local drug store. I took it for the first month of pregnancy until I saw my OB. She then prescribed me a dual pack that includes a prenatal vitamin and a DHA gel caplet. Also, the prenatal she prescribed has a higher dosage of folic acid than an OTC prenatal. Usually an OTC prenatal contains 400mcg of folic acid, which is fine pre-conception, but your intake should increase to atleast 600mcg once pregnancy is confirmed. (This according to the March of Dimes)

I was prescribed prenatals and calcium by my OB. My husband is in the air force, so on our base when a person comes out pregnant they have to go into this little meeting so that someone can explain things that will come up with the pregnancy and the insurance. Well they explained that if you're to sick in the beginning of your pregnancy and unable to keep your prenatals down that you can also take 2 of those gummi children's vitamins a day.

There are actually specially-formulated pre-natal vitamins that you can get through a prescription from your Dr., that have the right amounts of vitamins/minerals to help nourish you and the baby during pregnancy.
There are certain vitamins/minerals that can be dangerous if you take too much during this time, and regular over-the-counter vitamins can't be counted on to have the correct amounts of all the stuff you need.
Regarding food, just eat smart - lots of fruits/veggies/protein, and stay away from too much fats. If you can, get calcium-enriched OJ for a boost of calcium plus the extra folic acid.
This site has links to resources for good foods to be eating now. http://www.bygpub.com/natural/pregnancy.htm (scroll through the list to the "what you should be eating" section)
Congrats and good luck!

Prenatal vitamins... They have extra iron which is important for oxygen flow to the baby. They also have folic acid which is important for brain and spinal development. As far as foods... Lots of fresh fruits and veggies are always good. Whole grains and greens have lots of good vitamins in them. You also want to eat plenty of protein and foods with calcium. Stay away from too much fish (it can contain mercury), alcohol, raw eggs, and rare meats.

You should start on Prenatal Vitamins. Go to your Dr and talk to them about what kinds (if any) extra vitamins you should take. Lots of veggies & fruits are good, just make sure that you eat a well balenced diet.

You should begin taking a general vitamin with 400mg of Folic Acid. Many ob's don't give a pre-natal vit. anymore, they just have you take a multi.
Avoid:
Alcohol and caffeine: alcohol should be eliminated from your diet entirely, to reduce the chance of premature birth and fetal alcohol syndrome. Caffeine products should be reduced dramatically, as they can dehydrate you and deplete the amount of vitamins and nutrients in your body.
Raw foods such as uncooked or cured meats, sushi, raw shrimp, oysters, and eggs: these can contain bacteria that can make you and your baby very sick.
Unpasteurized foods such as soft cheeses, certain milks, and ciders: unpasteurized products contain bacteria which can pass on listeria, a serious infection.
Fish that contain high levels of mercury, including shark, King Mackerel, swordfish, and tilefish: high levels of mercury can cause serious side effects.

Prenatal vitamins, iron supplements (if you become anemic from pregnancy), and definitely folic acid. Stay away from cleaning the cat litter box and gardening without gloves. Eat plenty of fruits and veggies, and don't forget to drink milk daily, or take a calcium supplement.
