Is there a "truth" anymore? I wish to become a more engaged citizen but how can a person know what's "right" anymore?

It is very difficult to find the truth and I am not sure it's even possible which is a sad statement. The best thing to do is make sure your opinions are your own not what someone tells you to think.
The extremists you see on TV , be they Republican or Democrat, do not represent the majority of Republicans and Democrats in the country. They are on TV so the stations can get ratings. Most of us average people would be pretty boring.

Not all Republicans are Conservative, not all Democrats are Liberal. People with in their own parties don't agree on everything. Never have , never will.

One sad change I have seen in my years on earth is that people are so nasty if you don't belong to the same political party they do. It didn't used to be that way. My parents were Democrats and their best friends Republicans. They never argued over this nor did they think less of one another for their choices. My father fought in WWII so that we have the right to voice our opinion and the media and extremists are trying to take that away. You have a right to your opinions and don't let anyone tell you that you don't.

I hope you find a way to become more engaged. It's great to see you are interested.

There will never be 100% truth in politics because the politicans make their careers on the politics. They are just worried about getting reelected and thus have to please the people that get them there and thats usually not the american people but corporate american and special interest. If there ever was a day when truth was the answer maybe make all positions just one term and there gone so the people we elect are not making careers and money off us but maybe just maybe trying to make a difference for the short time that they have at their positions. That would get more people involved and that means more people would care about their country because they know they could actually change something where a lot of the issues are just banter between parties and left hopeless in the hearts of the average American.

You've asked a tough one there, what is truth? I would say you would have to ask yourself what you understand about the basic principles of liberty and how does the 'politics' stand up to those principles. For instance the 'Left' would have us believe in 'fairness' and 'equality' as a higher form of 'freedom' but in order to obtain this 'freedom' we must subjugate ourselves to the will of the majority and become carbon copies of our fellow citizens. The 'Right' will tell you that they abhor this surrender to 'mob rule' while all the time expecting you to live by their 'morale' codes, even if you don't see them as being such. Others will tell you the answer lies some where's in the middle, a balance between the two. I disagree. The 'Truth in politics' lies in our Constitution up to but not including the 16th amendment. I believe that it is from that point 'politics' got the upper hand and the 'law of the land' became whom ever could sway the will of the people ruled. But that's just the opinion of an ignorant old man who once took the words of slain President to heart, "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country".

Truth in politics?? That's like finding the "good" in Satan...

Truth in politics is whatever you are shown on the media screen. Politics are made to decieve. the very meaning of politics...

the art or science concerned with guiding or influencing governmental policy ; relations or conduct in a particular area of experience especially as seen or dealt with from a political point of view ; the art or science concerned with winning and holding control over a government

That's the Websters definitions. Politics were made to influence the way you think to sway you and those like you towards a collective thinking.

In short, truth in politics??

I think not...

You need to do a lot of reading, and listen to media representing both sides. Don't just accept what you see in the newspapers or hear on TV as being accurate and the only view - use the Internet to research the issues. See what the BBC in the UK is saying about the issue (if you are a US resident) so you get a different country's perspective. http://www.bbc.co.uk

Once you've done the research, form your own opinion, then write to all your state and federal representatives, regardless of the party they represent, making sure they understand how you stand on issues you feel are important.

yes there is a "truth" and it's in your thought process. when you listen to all of the politics and read all the mumbo-jumbo,just THINK! use your common sense and believe that you already know right from wrong.if it feels wrong to you, or sounds wrong to you, then it more then likley is WRONG. and don't be afraid to say something is wrong if it is.if you do that you will become a more engaged citizen and a stronger person.

Read as many sources as you can, and attempt to discern what their various agendas are, where they agree, where they disagree, where they get their funding, and how they gather their information.

You have to learn to read between the lines, because there is not and can never be any such thing as an objective report. Everything is written by people and therefore reflects their biases and social perspectives. Only in variety can you hope to assemble your picture of the Truth.

Nope. i don't agree. yet in basic terms on account which you used the be conscious 'grow to be'. certainty has continuously been optionally available in politics. on account that long till now united states of america replaced into based. one in each of united states of america's large recommendations replaced into freedom of the click. there replaced right into a time once you should anticipate the media to ... properly, to not be impartial ... yet there replaced right into a time while it replaced into solid corporation for the media to discover the certainty and wave it around. i think of that the ameliorations in what constitutes solid corporation for the media is the area that makes politics so frustrating now. that is not solid corporation anymore to even seek for the certainty, and the media has corrupted itself so badly chasing funds with the aid of 'opinion' exhibits like Beck and Olbermann that no person might have faith that they've been telling the certainty whether they started doing it back. There. that is my opinion on certainty and politics.

Good question. It takes a lot of work. If you're not able to dig deeper, at least keep a sense of skepticism on everything you hear.

Keep in mind that most media sources - liberal and conservative are rarely impartial. Read and listen to many different sources - liberal and conservative both. Don't take anything at face value. If something seems too good to be true or too terrible for words, check it out yourself. Good luck.

Well, when the are running, you have to take a lot of what they say with a grain of salt. You have to research their voting record and what they really do stand for. While in office, you have to learn to read between the lines, follow every little thing they do. It's really hard to do, but it is a way.
