I'm 40 & have ankle swelling when the weather is hot. My doctor said my very sedentary job is the main cause of the edema. He recommended ice packs, elevating the legs & getting more exercise. I'm sure yours did check you out to make sure there was no serious condition?
Here's a website with some good information.

Life Uniform can help!
This store sells support socks that help a lot with this problem. I know a lot of people that say their doctor recommends support socks or hose. Besides controlling swelling, they promote circulation, ease tired and achey legs and also help with preventing varicose veins. Check this out

or you can look to see if there is a store near you. My local store will send them to me free shipping if I call them. Give them a call and they'll probably be able to answer any questions you may have (503)364-9923. These are the best priced I've found for a great quality product. I paid $25 a pair at JC Penney and $12.50a pair for poor quality at WalMart. Try the knee high support socks $7.99, or the full support pantyhose if you have problems above the knee or like extra warmth. Since the socks and hose tend to be thin (although very durable) I wear a regular sock over the top to provide extra padding in my shoe. This is just my preference. I work retail and am on my feet all day running around, and these have been a lifesaver for me. Good luck!

Your doctor is wrong. Swelling does happen for a reason; many reasons in fact. You need to get a second opinion and get your circulatory system checked.
Edema (swelling of the lower legs) is a sign of cardiac/circulatory problems.
I had it back in 1996 (age 34) as a bad reaction to steroid treatment for an allergic reaction to medication. My lower legs were swelled up bad - especially my left side. It took six months of diuretics and blood tests (my white blood cells were also high) for it to clear up.
It could be anything from very serious (cardiac or clot) to not serious. Get yourself checked by a second doctor.

hmmm. . . not enough information. Did the doc check your heart to make sure the swelling was not a sign of congestive heart failure? Are you within a normal weight range? Heart problems and/or obesity may be one of the causes. Be sure to get thoroughly checked out and don't accept a cavalier explanation that "some women swell for no reason."
Good luck!

It could be fluid most commonly from salt . If you have had blood tests or a check for potassium, I know I had a problem for awhile , had to put my legs up, and decrease the amount of sodium in my diet. bettyk
