Go for the better package deal.
So long as it is at least an AMD 4600+ or an Intel 6400E you will not be lacking any power nor will you have any issues.
My personal choice ... AMD.
Go for the better deal.
* Expect lots of replies on this one .... PC people get very into the Intel / AMD debate.

Athlon X2 performs far better because of the way it handles data, although it's labeled specs are typically lower, they outperform intel.
Athlon's quad cores are the way to go, they are the best commercially available processors. next to that athlon's dual cores still heavily out-perform intel's quad cores.
Make sure you read the link below, it is un-biased and completely accurate.
If you want to understand why AMD's architecture is so superior visit the AMD's quad core website it does a good job of explaining the processors components.

core 2 is better but for your need an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ will be a good choice and it's almost 100$ cheaper than the core2 e6300 on newegg.com

Read this article.

Core 2 is generally better, but it depends on price. It is expected that AMD will cut their prices drastically early next month, so if you're in the market, wait.
