how do i coax (persuade him to do something) my bearded dragon to get off his perch or tree because i want to hold him and i heard that if you forceably take him off his perch he might cling (stick) to his perch and that might damage his legs

The best way to entice him down is to offer something tasty and bright especially something colorful - papaya - mango slices bring them running -even a mealworm - You know by now they eat any and everything. Food is the number one persuader in beardies .Don't worry about them being obese - they don't have food issues like humans . You can take them off their perch - just don't grab and jerk - use one hand to restrain and the other to GENTLY and slowly pry toe by toe off , one at a time .The loosened foot will cling to you instead . Handling is necessary for not only health checks, but you get a very mellow lizard.Believe me, I have a 3 legged big boy who was a VERY angry lizard when I rescued him in 1996 . He was named "Puffy " after "Puffy Combs- he had real attitude - now he is Puffy because he is a big softy -a puff ball. Patience is key -they are very intelligent, will come to trust you and will eventually come up to you like a dog.and snuggle flat on your warm body like a cat . By the way, have you seen the dragon "arm wave " - a sign that beardies use to say: "you are the dominant one" Very funny!

I seriously doubt you could not recognize a death grip on his branch and say I should stop. but to alleviate any fear of hurting him have his nails filed or if you feel up to it you file them with a regular light file you buy at walmart. there is a little curve hook at the end of the nail only file that part. you obviously can not file a 1 month old but around 3 months no problem. my vet uses a battery powered dremel with a 400 grit sand stone he can do my beardies all 3 in about 5 minutes total time. he does not charge me so I just let him do it. your beardie will have no ill affects. and you will reduce possible scratches to yourself and instinct reactions to drop the lizard because of the pain. they will still have great grabbing and climbing ability they just wont be able to get the hooks into and curl under the bark. its good you have been researching and are concerned enough to ask an intelligent question. good job

You could take him off his perch but just make sure you unhook any claws that might be stuck.Or put some food in his cage so he will jump down and get it.I LOVE MY BEARDIE!

When you pick him up make sure that his legs aren't clinging to the stick.

You can try to do it that way, but it will definatly hurt him/her, plus you don't want to do that do you. You can usually just push them, or a good technique; the water sprayer: it's safe- wont' kill them, and they get wet!
