1 Year is 6 months. As long as you stay out of trouble and complete some courses thats the way it works.

Not really, no. However, if you are sentenced to one year and you are a first offender (or even second or third) you will NOT serve the entire year's time, guaranteed.

I wouldn't know, I obey the law!

(except of course for the speed limit...but that's just a "guideline" isn't??)

yes they go by good behaviour and they will serve less time.
