"Handmaid's Tale" heavy duty freaky! Another book along that line--"The Gate to Women's Country" by Sherri S. Tepper. All of Tepper's books are great, unexepected plot, deep think, social/women's issues. My favorite book by her is, "Gibbon's Decline and Fall."
Gregory MaGuire's masterpiece, "Wicked" is also a great book. It is an alternate telling of the Wizard of Oz story from the Wicked Witch of the West's perspective. You will never look at Dorothy or Oz the same.
I also am a great fan of Neil Gaiman. My favorite is "American God's".
Of the Christopher Moore books, so far I like "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff Christ's Childhood Friend." Though, "A Dirty Job" runs an almost indecipherable second.
A great new author, first novel, Frank Beddor--"The Looking Glass Wars" is one of most interesting take's on the Alice in Wonderland story I have ever come across. He has a website. The author is an accomplished film maker so website is pretty cool. I hope they make this one into a movie.
Terry Pratchett--everything and anything I can get a hold of by this guy is great. His discworld series is wonderful. A whole alternate universe that explores today's "truths" in unexpected ways. My favorite by him is, "Mort". I highly recommend anything by him.
And two of my favorite author's wrote the best satire ever--Neil Gaimen AND Terry Pratchett got together and matched funny bones and the result is: "Good Omens".
"The Red Tent" by Anita Diamante a retelling of the biblical story of Rachel, Dineh and Jacob from a women's perspective. Beautiful and powerful.
I'm sure you've heard of "The Divine Secrets of the Yaya Sisterhood" by Rebecca Wells. In my opinion her first book the prequel is much better. It is called "Little Alters Everywhere" and is the story of the yaya's from the children's perspective. Beautiful and disturbing.
"Stones from the River" by Ursula Hegge. I believe this is an English translation of a German writer. Anyway, the book is beautiful, wonderful, powerful, unexpected....
Okay, I have a million others. This might start you out.

gossip girls: enter the teen scene of a gang of preppy fashionable and scandalous older teens who live in the rich upper west and east sides of new York city. drama, scandal, and love triangles are totally juicy and make it really worth reading.
I was a non-blond cheerleader: meet a simple brunette who walks in to a bimbo infested school, where EVERYONE is blond. literally. bleach or natural, it doesn't matter- if your not blond, your not in. she tries to make the other blonds fall and join the squad to conquer all... as the only brunette ever to be on it.

sisterhood of the traveling pants series: the series is full of drama and real life situations as four girls try to stay together in spirit as the are separated over the summer for the first tie I their lives. there are four great books in the series now, and the last one has come out in hardback only.
valentine princess: one of the most comedic princess diaries books I have ever read, this cute comedy filled with cute twists and turns and comedic surprises with romance mixed in is truly remarkable. meg Cabot is truly genius.

I was going to give the first woman to respond a "thumb up" and accidentally hit the wrong "thumb." I thought her answer was wonderful and I am so sorry to have messed up. What can I do to fix it? I don't know where to start except, "mea culpa"
