Communication is the key. Also if your talking about defense as 1v1's then try not to make the first move and never stab. Just keep backing up shuffling your feet till you see that ball get just barely out in front of them that you can stick him. While on def try to have an offensive mind and determine what you think he is going to do next. Always be a step ahead.

always put your right foot forward to the ball create a lil space between you and the forward so he can make a bad touch and you snag the ball
listen to gk he should share info with you
on corners and set pieces hold your man back keep him tight
stay on your feet only slide as a last resort
and most important when in doubt clear it out

anticipation is the key. working on speed is the second. even if the guy crosses you the first time, you try to get back in the play as fast as you can. also turn in the direction you want your opponent to go. if push comes to shove, shove back. intimidation also is a great mind tool.

have you to talk to your mates and listen to the keeper, b/c then you can better know where everyone on the field is. if you know where your mates are and your opponents are you can anticipate what will happen better. these little things make up for lack of speed, ability and mental sharpness.

its not that hard just learn how to dribble so you know what the offense player is going to do.
