Are they considered to be the same? I am asking because I am debating with someone about the two words. I have looked up both words. Your opinion, would be kindly appreciated.

If you alleviate a disease or combat a disease. Are they both the same?

No, alleviate implies easing something, combat is an aggresive action.

Used the way you did they can have the same outcome, but not the same meaning , Alleviate means to easy or reduce something, To combat something means to fight it. Interesting though. I got it! You can combat something without alleviating it. So, no. Man I gotta get off here, the words are starting to run together. Nite all.

I thought alleviate was to relieve something of a symptom or unpleasantness, while combat was to fight it, with no certainty as to the outcome. I'd rather alleviate than combat.
