If you use basic math to find the solution, there is an infinite amount of answers. Unless you have to simplify it, in which case the answer is 4.

2+2=4
2+2=2+2
2+2=3+1
2+2=5-1

However, there are other ways to look at this.

In numerology, 2+2=9
In philosophy, 2+2=2+2
In stupidity, 2+2=22
In proper english, 2+2=four

I'm guessing the answer your looking for is four because you categorized your question in Words and Wordplay.

Of course, 2+2 = 1. The answer lies in the sky.

If you see two clouds float and combine with two more clouds, you get one big cloud. 2+2=1

2 + 2 can also equal 22.

Four is so mundane and banal (look them up).

usually such a question would naturally be interpreted as a simple mathematical one.

But that seems suspicious. Too simple. So let's run through some options.
If it is mathematical, what do the numbers refer to? We presume not simple units. Sines? what base? if base 3, for example, the 2 + 2 = 11.

Could they be physical entities? Two cups of marbles plus two cups of sand equals two cups of marbles with sand in it.
