In 1918 the German army attacked successfully and over-ran the allied lines. However their advance was so rapid they ran out of means of supplying their troops. German troops in some places captured Allied supply dumps and sat down to have a few good meals on captured food. When the Allies counter-attacked, they found German troops well fed on allied supplies but short of ammunition. The German advance collapsed and the Allies over-ran their own old positions and then the old German positions. While the Germans retreated, it was largely in good order. The bad news from the front seriously weakened the position of the German government at home, coming so soon after some very good reports.
The army did not surrender. The Germany army was retreating but was not defeated. An armistice was negotiated for 11am on 11 November 1918. That meant only a cessation to fighting. It could have restarted. The Germans agreed to it because of potential and real revolutions within Germany. Though the fighting stopped, the revolutions continued and the government effectively collapsed. That meant that they could no longer command an army and the newly formed government was obliged to sign the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.

The German army was experiencing extreme losses during the end of WWI. After the industry monster USA got involved, the German government knew it could not fight even a one front war against America, Great Britain, and France (Russia pulled out 1917 under Brest-Litovsk Treaty). The German government agreed to an armistice and peace officially ensued on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1919. The horror of WWI had been ended.

Couple of reasons:
1) In a war of attrition such as WWI, Germany started running out of able-bodied soldiers to send to the front lines and started to encounter massive supply issues.
2) There was a revolution in Germany in 1918 and the Kaiser ran to the Netherlands and was granted asylum. Once he was out of power, support for what had become an extremely unpopular war all but disappeared.
Armistice was signed on Nov 11, 1918 (11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). Germany tried negotiating with America for terms of the surrender, thinking that they would get more favorable conditions than if they had to sit down with the British & French. Didn't quite work out the way they hoped.

They didn't. The politicians on both sides agreed a cease fire
and an armistice which was ratified at the Treaty of Versailles.
The Germans came off far worse under the terms of the Treaty.
The politicians did this because the war had cost both sides enormous numbers of casualties and economic stress. They realised that the events in Russia with the revolution and the Bosheviks taking control could happen in their own countries if the war continued.

The German army itself never actually surrendered in WWI. The leaders of the country signed an armistice and according to many of the soldiers, betrayed the army. This was one of the reasons Hitler was able to come to power by saying that the German army was not beaten in war but was betrayed by their leaders so there should be new leaders. Him.

They didn't. The German government agreed to an armistice because the war was draining the country of resources, but they had demobilized before they realized they were giving away as much as they did. They were thinking of an end more like that of the Korean conflict in 1953. The feeling in the army that they'd been sold out by the folks at home was one of the major points of contention in the post-war period.

The Germans under Kiser Willhelm II surrendered because the USA got involved. They could not fight Russia, Great Britain and the USA at the same time.
