Some wear them to absorb sweat because so much sweat bothers them and then some wear them because they are prone to bronchial problems such as pneumonia. (One player in High School told me that was his reason one time.) And then it's probably just comfortable for others.

Because some school jerseys have to be returned after every season and although they get washed, it's still unsanitary to think that you're sweating through something that 50 other people have sweated on.

Some wear it for preference. They do have under-armor cold fits that are supposed to keep you a little cooler.
Also, JJ Redick wore a shirt most of his career because he had backne (acne on his back).

So other players sweat doesn't get rubbed all over their bodies like what happened to Ben Stiller in that movie "Along Came Polly".

Georgetownstarted doing that 20 years ago. I think it looks messy, but I guess it absorbs sweat and keeps off drafts in those big arenas.
