I assume that you are talking about the taxes that led to the beginning of the Revolutionary War.
They were upset because they weren't given a say over the new taxes. The British Parlaiment applied the taxes without giving the colonists a say in them.

All the "no taxation w/o representation" stuff is true. But it's really just the "last straw" of many things they were mad about. Basically, the colonies were treated by the empire as a supporting element to the empire, rather than an independent country. The taxes by themselves would have probably been ok if the colonies had the ability to trade with other countries, like France. But if you have us in a monopolistic trading agreement AND you tax the hell out of us, we're going to get mad.
The Declaration of Independence lists 27 grievances against the King, imposing taxes without our consent is only one.
