Is there a source somewhere that could tell me an average age that people are "orphaned" by the loss of both their parents?

I don't know of a source unless you might check the ssi death records. My parents both die at 50. I am now 54, it sure makes you think about things differently knowing that you are now older than they were when they died.

I am not sure where you would find statistics for this. I am sure even countries differ in the statistical averages.

I am 49. My mother died when I was 34 at the age of 54. My father is still living (he is 73). My paternal grandfather died when I was 24 (at the age of 71). My paternal grandmother died when I was 45 (she was 85). My maternal grandfather died before I was born, and my maternal grandmother died when I was 21 (she was 71).

Alot depends on the longevity of your family. My father's side of the family all live to a ripe old age. On my mother's side, cancer or kidney failure kills eveyone before their time. Variable are always going to be different for different families, and I am not sure there is a law of averages.
