Actually, if you check your history, the colonies were VERY disorganized in their response to the British. Congress was slow in funding the Continental Army and almost FAILED to supply them... each Colony took care of supplying and feeding their OWN Militia before assisting the Army..

A good Historical-Novel series to get an idea of this would be Jeff Shaara's :

"Rise To Rebellion" and "The Glorious Cause"
