There is no real "Best Motherboard" your best bet is to look @ its features. Its best to have 2 PCI-E slots, 4 ram slots, and should support the latest CPU technologies

First thing (honestly) to say is that your buddy should know enough to offer some advice ;-)

Secondly do you want a general purpose computer, gaming, music server, network computer/wireless workstation?

If you don't know much and have never built one I'd go to a parts and repair shop that deals with a lot of used parts are ask the owner a lot of questions and give as many details. Those guys are often happy to help you learn when they have time, but some are kinda frazzled...it's a busy, hard job for some of them!

Best of luck!

There are a lot of good ones, the main thing is to make sure all components are compatible, especially the CPU socket. I like MSI with AMD CPU's myself. You get what you pay for. Take a look at these sites for parts:

www.zipzoomfly.com

what CPU do you plan to use? for a Core 2 CPU i would say a motherborad with the intel 965p northbridge and ICH8 southbridge is a very good choice.
MSI is a good motherboard manufacturer.
