First of all, Portugal is entirely different from Spain. They are not a 'lesser version' of Spain. It is an entirely different country! Depending on what you're wanting to do on your vacation, either would be a good choice. Lisbon is a thriving metro...you can get and do nearly anything there...
Seixal is nearby (Setubal) and...it's magnificent...Cascais is also a good area, near the ocean, lots of beaches...
Anyway, either one you choose you will have lots of choices as to how to spend your vacation...though personally I'd choose Portugal as it is actually less expensive, and the beaches and the people are wonderful. Many speak English as well...though knowing a little Portuguese (or Spanish, if you go to Spain) will help. Check out Rick Steve's travel guides (can be found on Amazon and most bookstores) for excellent travel tips and useful language tools.
I hope your vacation is spectacular!!!

Portugal being a lesser version of Spain is like saying that the US is a lesser version of Mexico....
Portugal and Spain are both incredible countries and very different.
Portugal is cheaper and has less tourists.....
If you decide Portugal: come to Lisbon in June around the 13th (lots of cool stuff going on)

Portugal is far more friendlier, cheaper & not so many tourists.
I hated Spain, couldn't get out fast enough. I actually changed my flights from departing Barcelona to departing Lisboa thats how bad it was.
Crime rate is higher in Spain too.
Ive been to Portugal 2x now... mostly Lisboa, Cascais, Sintra & Tomar.
I recommend Tomar for the historic castle, Cascais for the beach, Sintra for the little shops & pretty township (look out for the famous cake shop - the locals will direct you).
Lisboa is a contradiction of extreme modernism & ancient history... in and around St George castle are some wonderful old shops, markets etc. Belem is interesting, with much to see.

If I were you I would go to Spain. Why is because Portugal comes from Spain settlers. So it would almost be like seeing a lesser version of Spain. Hope you enjoy!
