In our area, Petco and PetsMart are in cooperation with the local animal rescues. The rescue organizations post and receive the adoption fee.
The Petco and PetsMart here don't sell dogs or cats nor do they take any fee for adoptions from the rescues. They DO donate the indoor space for displaying the fostered animals.
Your best bet is to look up your local shelters or rescues on the net. They often put their "inventory" of animals online. The fees vary.

Most 'Pet Stores' are allowing 'Rescue groups to bring the pets they have rescued for 'adoption'. Beleave me most or 'all' rescues are in the red,ALWAYS. Many take 'animals' that our on their 'last day', or the public, who for some 'reason' can't keep their pet any longer. The ones that 'more' then make me 'crazy' is the person who needs a home for their animal..NOW! they are moving this week-end, I have always wanted to ask..'So when you woke this morning their was a 'U-haul' truck in your driveway, so you have to use it NOW!! Whats wrong with these people, they HAD to know they were moving before TODAY.
We Spay or Neuter, give them shots, house them in our homes, teach them maners, we also started giving them a 'Microchip', those are the easy ones. Many we 'Bring In' have a 'Broken Leg' or other 'Medical problems' which we pay for out of your 'Donation'. Our Group is all 'Volunteers' & we have no shelter, we 'Foster' the animal in our own homes, sometimes a 'Shelter' will call us when they 'pick-up' an Animal, that has been hit by a car, or like 'KA's' (hope thats write) who adoped a 'Starved dog', we usually fatten them up some, but all groups are different or maybe the group just had to many animals, so put 'KA's' dog out for adoption.
So the 'Rescue group' isn't making money from your 'Donation'. All pets cost money when you adopt them, keeping them in good health, or what happens if you dog gets out & is hit by a car, do you pay to have them made well or do you put them to sleep. An Animal cost money & I tell people you will have this 'Animal' for 20yrs, are you able to keep them or do you call us when you move to an House/Apt. that doesn't allow pets. I am lucky my Husb. just bought a house, its to small, still we all fit & 'get along', well sometimes one cat will call another a name, or want that lap, so there is a 'hiss & a slap' but nothing more.
KA I want to 'THANK YOU' a million times for adopting, the skinney, scared dog, she won't leave your side & I know she has 'Thanked you' in 'her own way'. What a great person you are.

Usually yes. The rescue people make money to support theri efforts. Some of them are a bit of a racket I think. We paid for our dog and then you buy all the stuff you need to bring them home. I think Cali cost us $175.- She was skin and bones and terrified of everything. She is a different dog now and very good too. She has filled out nicely, takes long walks in the evening ( 2-3 miles), is a great watch dog, loves goldfish crackers and goes to doggie day care 3 times a week. She won the doggie lottery when we coaxed her out of the cage she was in. We got her from Culpeper Rescue in VA at Petsmart.

Ugh. Petco. I accompanied a pair of hamsters there and one died the following day. I talked approximately as them to warn them that others could be ill, and that they made me carry the lifeless physique right down to "run assessments". I knew that i might in all possibility ought to hold it down, so I wasn't too weirded out, yet as quickly as I have been given there they threw it interior the trash. suitable in front of me. and then gave me a discount coupon. What?! lots of the cats there are from shelters although suitable? If I have been you, i might flow immediately interior the direction of the look after they're from. (maximum are backed by making use of Petco because greater human beings flow to petco than to shelters.) they are in a position to even have the skill to get you an identical cat in case you act in the present day!!! yet no, I doubt they care. I propose, i'm particular lots of the staff are animal enthusiasts and do their terrific. yet as a company? No. Doubt they care. be careful adopting cats from a place like that besides- quite some circumstances because they're no longer rather "their" cats (Assuming it is an identical on your city as mine) they do no longer clean their cages as in many circumstances, provide them interest, socialize them, etc like actual shelters do. i do no longer understand what state you reside in or something however the Humane Society is often who's backed there. flow to them immediately- they truthfully have severe standards and can rather choose to take heed to you out.

When I was looking for a cat a couple years ago, it cost $100 or over. If you want a pet for less, check you local animal shelter. They usually don't go above $50 or $60! Sometimes they are free!

Go to the animal shelter. I went to Petco in Virginia yesterday and they were selling full-grown cats that they must have gotten from the animal shelter, and the price was $135 plus tax.

Yes, in my area (Texas) there are adoption fees like any other shelter, around $50-$75 for dogs and cats. Our local one supplies you with a spay/neuter and vaccination vouchers that most vets take.

I know that in Mass. There is a $100 adoption fee. I don't know if it is mandatory or what it covers.
Good for you to adopt, rather than buy from a dog/cat 'mill' :)
