He can't exert any privilege over a former White House Counsel and I doubt if she will lie under oath. This can be real trouble for Bush.

vabraces: Its real. I think the Democrats really have Bush now - on toast. If there is nothing to hide, then why NOT let his staff testify under oath and let the truth come out. Call this a fishing expedition if you like but the fish ARE out there and biting.
The real issue is having an independent Dept of Justice, free from political control. Otherwise we will end up with a dictatorship. The really ironic thing is IF the presidency survives this with all this power intact, a Democratic president will be your worst nightmare. Think about that.

Right You Are: And this is such a sweet irony isn't it?
What is really going to bake the Republican noodle is hypothetically, if Bush somehow saves his unitary executive presidency, and a Democratic president is elected, they could stop Republicans from winning elections for years, maybe decades.
I like the blowback of using the Patriot Act against the very people who created it.

Answerman: It seems where the Republicans miscalculated was that they would lose control of the House of Representatives. In just 4 short months they went from being the party in control of the legeslative and judiciary branch as well as the White House to a lame duck presidency presiding over an unpopular war and a slate of one bungled mess after another - increasingly disliked by the American people. With out the protection of the gavel, Democrats are moving in for the kill and we are seeing the gray dawn of an era of accountability.
I might almost feel sorry for President Bush if he had a shred of decency about him, but for all the thousands of unnecessary deaths he and his henchmen have caused. Saved by the wisdom of a majority of American voters, our Republic, while not entirely out of danger, has been temperorily been stayed from certain fascism. - or that's my take. Thanks for your insight. I think we are on the same page.

Let's call it the Patriot Act being used to have the administration testify under oath. If they have nothing to hide it shouldn't be a problem. Isn't that the slogan used to defend their actions? The President had every authority to replace the eight, it's the manner in which it was done and the controversy it stirred. Another typical day at work for this administration.

I am sure that the midnight oil is burning in the Bush White House as we speak, not for what is good for the country, but how can we fix this. He is in high industrial strength damage control. I think he feels that how he runs the business of the country is his business and not the congress, but the congress represents the people and a majority of the people want to know just how corrupt and criminal it has gotten since the attack on the Iraqi people, based on the presidents lies. I see, obstruction of Justus charges in the future for Mr. Bush, Mr. Rove and Mr. Cheney. Investigations are the right of congress and the president will eventually have to provide them the tools to do that. See USA V. Nixon to see how much weight executive privilege carries in a criminal investigation with the supreme court.

Oh, I'm sure he will try to exert some kind of power over her. "Harriet, do this for the country. If you don't, we will have a smear campaign on you and ruin you. You'll never work in Washington again."

If there were a real scandel here than yes, it would be a problem. Once again the left has manufactured a scandel for political gain.

the problem with lying is that a wide and fragile net has to be woven to protect it.

I'm not convinced she can damage him at all.

Unless they ask her if she and Bush have ever "clintoned" in the Oval Office. The thought gives me the heebie jeebies.
