Algebra in high school? They have remedial classes that are lower than college algebra, so does this mean that most college students start with college algebra and not pre calculus or calculus?

Math is there as a discipline. As one of my teachers say you don't need to know the details to become president of your country. Pre-calculus means talking about functions (e.g. linear, quadratic, polynomial, etc).

These remedial classes I believe are non-credit and instead review the basic algebra concepts required for pre-calculus. Whether you take calculus ultimately it depends on your degree. The first math course in my university serves as a pre-calculus but the second course varies (one can take statistics, others will take calculus). Since I am a management economics major, I had to take calculus.

At my highschool nearly everyone had to take pre-calc... only those who were poor at math did not take it.... then again the majority of us were in either AP or IB math which was close to college lvl calculus. I took algebra in 9th or 10th grade... When you get to college you will almost definately have to go through at least pre calc or even calc in half a year instead of a full year in high school. I highly recommend getting it out of the way in highschool and trying to get college credit for it. You will probably regret having to take it in college.

Alot of people do take pre-cal in high school, but there are many who are taking geometry or algerba I in high school.

Colleges need to be fair to everyone, and not everyone is able to take pre-calculus or maybe even algebra in highschool, so they need to have couses like algerba, just cause someone can't do pre-cal or algerba, shouldn't preclude them from getting an education they want.

it also largely depends on the college you are looking at, if its a small community college, of course it will.

depends on the degree your going for...pre-cal is intended to be more challenging than college algebra. Some degrees only require basic math credits, but some require intense science/math courses.

at some point, everybody in college takes pre-calc and calc. depending on what math class you're in your freshman high school year, you may take pre-calc or calc in high school. colleges offer college-level algebra because people who aren't as good in math in high school have the opportunity to take it.
