I realize you can make one to back up. I don't want to loan them the original. I've had DVD's borrowed ideffinitely for this reason.

well on your dvd case there should be two extra proofs of purchase just for that reason of backing them up. They make a lot of money on people backing up dvd's so it should not be a problem. Not all Dvd's have extra proofs but here is an example, the new Rocky Balboa movie does not have extra proofs but the movie Babel has 2 extra proofs.
