When I'm trying to befriend a guy because he's cool, not because I have feelings for him, it seems like they always turn down my offer to hang out, but we still talk all buddy buddy and stuff IMing and in school. I asked my friend and she said it was because they might think I'm asking them out, so how do you ask to hang out without making it a date??

The other answerers make good points. I think a lot of guys and girls, especially in high school, will take into consideration someone's looks even for friendship. It's sad, but I think it's pretty true.

If you talk in school and buddy IMing stuff, that usually constitutes a friendship. "Hey do you wanna hang out" does sound like a date offer. Honestly, friendship cannot be rushed.
