Because there are chickens called Rhode Island Reds that lay brown eggs and Banty chickens that lay light green and light blue eggs. It depends on the breed of the chicken.
Chickens that lay white eggs are easier to raise and can produce two eggs a day now so that's why we get the white eggs at the grovery store instead of the others. Although they are now selling the brown eggs in grocery stores. When raising chickens you have to put a light in where they are during the winter or they won't lay eggs in the dark.
I grew up with Rhode Island Reds and Bantys and it was interesting and fun to get the different color eggs. They all tasted the same to me. One egg was just bigger than the other.

Why do some people have brown eyes and some people have blue? Chicken eggs come in A LOT of different colors it's just that white and brown are the most common. My chickens give me brown, blue, many shades of green, white, some people even get pink eggs from their chickens. It's just a matter of what the chicken is genetically wired to produce.
It certainly has nothing to do with the involvement of the rooster!

It depends on the breed of the chicken. An individual chicken will always lay basically the same color of egg. From what I understand if a chicken's earlobe is white, she will always lay white eggs. A chicken with a red earlobe will lay brown eggs or even blue or green eggs in some breeds.

They spray them like that in the factory. It helps to identiofy the High Cholesterol eggs from those with Low Cholesterol. JUST KIDDING. Different breeds lay different color eggs.
HERE's THE SECRET to predicting the color of eggs a chicken will lay: look at their earlobes. This is true stuff. The pigments in the outer layer of the eggshell will always approximate the color of the earlobe of the chicken that laid the egg.
Cheers!

As a poultry farmer I can tell you that white chickens lay white eggs, and brown chickens lay brown eggs. The light Sussex is a white hen, and the Rhode Island red is brown. The Marran isa browny grey and lays brown eggs. This is a simple answer for a simple question. No doubt all sorts of clever dicks will say that there are exceptions. Of course there are !
