here are some sugestions i hope they help:
Read the dullest book
Count backward
Avoid excitement shortly before bedtime
Keep your bedroom dark and quiet
Get out of bed after 20 minutes of trying to fall asleep
Massage your neck or legs, take a warm bath
Try using the "negative reinforcement" which is balance your checkbook or clean bathroom, kitchen, etc
hope that helps.

There are several things that will help with sleep. One, as you've already mentioned is routine. This means going to sleep (or at least being in bed) at the same time everyday (including weekends!) and waking at the same time.
There's also things that you can do during the day and at night to help. One huge thing is NEVER NAP!!! Napping is the worst thing for your sleeping patterns and you have to stop it so that you will be able to sleep during the night.
You can also get lots of excersize during the day (but NEVER BEFORE BED) and do not drink caffiene if possible, but as you're not sleeping you might need some, in that case, do not drink it past noon. Before bed you should try taking a relaxing bath (not a shower) or reading. There's also a chemical called Tryptophan, which is in warm milk and in turkey which makes people sleepy. There are also numerous sleep aiding teas at your local drugstore.
To make the most of your sleep time, make sure that your clock is not visible from your bed. If you need your alarm clock, then turn it around the other way. Also, NEVER do anything in you bed other than sleep (or sex ;) ). This means no TV, no work, nothing.
Some things to do while your trying to sleep is investing in a sleep mask if you can't sleep in light, or a nightlight is you can't sleep in the dark. Also, it has been found that sleeping in socks makes a better sleep for some people.
Finally, if you've tried all these things and your still sitting in bed awake, then get up and do something quiet for a couple minutes or a half hour, then go back to bed. Don't just stay in bed the whole time. On the other hand, a lot of people think they have insomnia because they don't feel the urge to get into bed. So always spend some time in bed even if your not tired yet, you might just conk out.
If you can't sleep with any natural methods, don't be scared to go to your doctor. It might even be a mental illness like anxiety or depression. Or your doctor can perscribed you a sleeping aid. Good Luck!

although i am not sure what specifically you are worried about, have you tried writing down all the thoughts in your head about the situation? sometimes getting it out of your head can help a bit. you could also write a letter to the person, saying everything you want to say, but not send it to them. it's a way of 'talking' to the person and telling them how you feel. it might sound stupid but it has worked for me in the past. i was trying to address the source behind your insomnia.
in terms of sleep, a herbal remedy you can get at a pharmacist or walmart etc is Valerian. it is supposed to help you relax and fall asleep.
i would also suggest a nice relaxing warm bath, with candles .
or play some very relaxing music, perhaps classical, or meditation type music (New Age stuff), that might help you relax. some people find the nature sounds relaxing too, like the sound of waves or whales.
if you can't sleep after 1/2 hr get up outta bed and try doing something very very mundane like reading a dull book, drinking hot milk can also help.
i hope you feel better and manage to get some much needed rest!

Insomnia has so many causes. They say it is not enough melatonin, but taking that didn't help me.
Exercise is about the best remedy, in my experience. Make sure you get lots of exercise every day and of course eat a balanced diet. Lots of raw foods are advised if you can tolerate them. Be sure to eat NO processed foods or artificial sweeteners, and very few sweets.
Hatred is poison to the body and the spirit. Meditation and getting in touch with your spiritual self can help that. Find a Urantia Readers' group near you and join...they are such loving and helpful people and will lovingly help anyone.
When body mind and soul are in harmony, peace within is the result. It is such a wonderful experience, and sleep comes easy and pleasantly.
If this fails, try counselling or seeing a psychologist.
