I'm looking at maybe buying a 1998 Chevy Lumina used, and was wondering how well they held up, what the gas mileage is, all that good stuff.

They are basically the same as a pontiac gran prix mechanically. My 92 GP ran well over 200,000 miles with minimal problems. You can expect mileage in the 20-28 mpg range on the highway.

I think you are asking about a lumina car. I am a dyed in the wool Chevy truck freak. That being said I have mixed feelings on the 80 and early 90s cars etc. I do however own a 92 Lumina APV van, and I love it. I traded $100 off a snow plow bill for it, have run it over a year,. and still have less than $1,200 into it. Had to drop about $750 into it when I got it. The rest was a PS line, altinator, ingnition control modual over the last year. I do my own work or it would be higher $. It is very very comfortable to drive, get about 18 to the gallon. Not bad for 100,000 plus miles and loaded with tools most of the time. Gets around good in the snow too.

It all comes down to how well the previous owner took care of the car. My brother-in-law has a 1993 Lumina. he drives 45 miles each way to work, so he's mostly on the highway. He's a stickler for keeping the oil changed, tune ups, etc. He's just about gotten to 370,000 miles, without major problems.

Of course, that doesn't guarantee the one you're looking at will go that far, but it does show what's possible.

i own a shop, and really these are nice cars, they hold up about as good as any other Chevy,or car for that matter,as far as major problems ,they don't give no more or less than the average vehicle, and if you take good care of them they will last.i know of a few high mileage ones around, and there getting up there on ,mileage, enough that i wouldn't take them on a long trip, but this one customer i have take his from Tennessee,to new york all the time and it with over two hundred thousand on it,so they do pretty good, the biggest complaint i hear from them is they don't get the best mileage in the world, and everyone wants all the miles per gallon they can get,but that's about it,good cars, not the best on gas,but they will hold up pretty well, good luck with it if you buy it,hope this helps.

I used to own a chevy lumina and it was really good. It was a 93 and my Dad sold it to me as a second car and it was always reliable and never had any problems! The only reason i sold it was to make a down payment on a newer model vehicle.

my son had 2 of them, a 92 and a 93, he loved them, basically trouble free, the only problem they had was the rear brakes on them wore out quickly due to people not using the parking brake very often it would rust up and cause the brakes to drag too much, if you use the parking brake every so often and keep it freed up you probably won't have that problem, the only other problem he had was his drivers side door handle broke and he had to replace a waterpump, not too bad fo 170,000 miles, he had the 3.1 v6 in both cars and it got decent gas mileage.

I think the Chevy Lumina is ugly. It lasts, but it isn't produced anymore so that says something about it. I don't like American cars. (unless it is hot!)

Ewww, GM cars are trash. And the Chevrolet Lumina? How anyone is stupid enough to spend their hard earned money on GM cars is beyond me

Read what they say on any consumer index regarding the Chevrolet Lumina

GM makes all their money on parts and warranty repairs that they charge their ripped off customers lots of money for

I generally don't like american cars. i own a mustang myself but that's a different story. If you want reliability, go Japanese. My sister owned an Mitsubishi Mirage that went to over 220,000 miles and still had 30 mpg!!! I own a 1990 Dodge Colt (same thing) and it's pushing 170,000 miles and still running strong!!!
