Each school has a different curriculum. Also, we were wondering about what these kids know as well & saw a disclaimer that said the kids are given study packets related to the material. So, don't feel bad - it's not just that these kids know this stuff - they have studied to the test that is being given.
I wonder if this program is going to affect kid's desire to learn if they see that what they are learning in class today will not be remembered when they are adults.
So for all the kids reading this: What you learn in class is important to the grade you are in today & to get you into high school & college. When you are older - just like now for you - what you don't use, you don't always remember. That doesn't mean it's not important - just not necessarily important for me to remember today - I work with computers, geometry & geography aren't really necessary.

I think it depends on the school district that you are from. The district that I teach in starts teaching basic algebra in second grade and basic geometry in third grade. Our fourth graders do learn about the different types of rock, so that would fit in for us.I teach first graders and by the end of the year they have to know the different types of clouds and where they are located in atmosphere. They also have to be able to write a paper that has a topic sentence and and closing sentence with proper punctuation and capitalization throughout the paper. They also learn about weather and economics among other things. This is for 6-year-olds, so I imagine other districts are doing the same thing.

Yup, I'm in 6th grade and about to graduate from a Filipino private school... I learned that lesson about igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks last year, in 5th grade...
The lessons they teach us really depend on the school, the teacher and what the government thinks we should know...
If you wanna be smarter than your classmates, do some advanced reading... Trust me, it helps!

I learned that in 3rd grade.
Though I think the show's name should be changed to
"Can you remember stuff you learned in grade school better than a 5th grader"?
The Adults DO know the answers, they just forgot them over the last 20+years

I think b/c different schools teach things at different times. There's no set time to learn things. I think they just take stuff they think 5th graders will know, and use it.
