I never feel powerful giving out homework b/c I know it's all going to come back to me and then I'll have to spend much more time than my individual students did doing it to grade it.

manhattanmaryanne is definitely talking out of her b*tt. Teachers do not feel powerful when they give homework because they know the more they give, the more work teachers will have in checking/correcting it. manhattan seems to think that it's enough for teachers to get all the information across in the lesson. Of course she imagines that the teacher is simply a vessel of knowledge that he/she simply opens and dispenses into the student's peabrains. One saying goes "the teacher can only open the door; it is up to the student to walk through". Homework is a way of giving the student a chance to do some walking on his or her own

I absolutely hate giving out homework. Last year I taught science and gave out very little homework. This year I have had to teach some math and math requires homework, there's no way around it. They need the practice or they will never be able to repeat the steps needed to solve the problems. The homework I do give contains around 10 problems and I allow students to start working in class so they can ask me questions. I try as hard as possible to make it easy for me as well as the students.

I do not know of any teacher that gets a "power" boost by handing out homework.

I do know of many teachers that use and abuse the assignment of homework (for any subject matter) because they are usually incompetent teachers to begin with. Power has nothing to do with these individuals.

On the other hand, some subject matter (for example: math, English, etc.) requires problem solving homework quite often.

Listen well in the classroom and your homework will be much easier when the time comes to do it.

Good luck!

Are you kidding? Giving homework is extra work for us. I teach special ed, so I never even give homework, because I know all the extra work I put in to make the stuff will all be wasted when I never even get it back, and then I have to correct it. Homework sucks for teachers as well as kids.

Teachers often give students homework because they want them to practice what they learned in class that day. It shouldn't be used as a form of punishment. And for a hint they give students lots of homework when they aren't getting a topic such as spelling.... P-O-W-E-R-F-U-L ( powerful). Also why teachers curse spell check it makes students lazy!

Never, I am not a big fan of homework. Students already spend six and a half hours in school each day, why should they have to work on it during their off hours too - how many jobs in the real world do have to take homework home in? (other than teaching!)
The only time my students have homework is when they haven't used their classtime appropriately, then they have to take it home to complete it.

I personally don't. I know this sounds horrible, but sometimes I just give them the homework so their parents will stay off my back. I don't believe it's necessary all the time. I DO feel like I'm sticking it to someone when they've been suspended or have to stay at school during a field trip. I give them loads of work then.

Actually - I feel rather annoyed by giving out homework because whatever the amount of work the student feels he or she is doing - it is many more times difficult for me - because I have to grade the 130 assignments when they come in. I certainly don't feel powerful from assigning it - its just the job.

Good Luck!!!

They absolutely do NOT feel power! In fact, they DON'T want to grade it but they CARE about the kids having a good education. Teachers are PEOPLE...if people want power, they would NOT go into teaching, they'd find another job!
