The brake lights on my car are both out. It isn't the fuse could both brake lights go out at or near the same time??

I am a female and don't know very much about cars, so go easy on me.

Great answers here, thanks a million. I have checked the lights and they all work just fine. Haven't checked the blinkers yet, never thought of that. The one in the rear window does work. Not sure if that makes any difference. I am going to replace the fuse just to make sure. I haven't gone out to buy new bulbs yet but I have found out where they go and I can change them. BTW my car is a '03 Kia Optima if that helps.
Not playing the pitiful female bit, I am just a female that knows nothing about cars.
I have a perfect driving record and I don't want my lack of brake lights to shake that up.

Yes, they can . I had a brand new car in 1966 that had the 6 tail light bulbs working but the 6 brake light side of the double filament were burned out. Threw us off guard as this was a first for the dealership.
All cars since 1986 have what are called third type stop lights in the back window area. See if yours work. On some cars, the stop light bulbs, direction light rear bulbs and the 4 way flasher (hazard) share the same bulb.

Both Brake Lights Went Out

I can happen but highly unlikely. Are your dashlights working? if not it is definately a fuse even though you said it isnt. I work on cars all the time and had an issue that was a fuse I was sure I had looked at 3 or 4 times already. Bulbs are only a couple of bucks and isnt bad to have spares anyways. I would buy some bulbs and put one in and if that doesnt work then at least you will have spares. I am assuming your taillights are completely out not just the brakelights. If not a fuse check the switch under your dash where your brake pedal goes up and there is a switch that RELEASES when pushing the brake.

Yes, it just happened on my 2012 Honda Accord. Both brake light bulbs went out at the same time. Maybe even on the same day. The third brake light (rear windshield) still worked so I knew it wasn t the brake pedal switch. The horn still worked so I knew it wasn t the fuse.
Replacing them was easy. Got Sylvania bulbs from walmart for $5 and got to the bulbs from the trunk after pulling back the liner. Need flat head screwdriver and gloves or paper towels (finger grease is bad for the bulbs). Took about 15 minutes.

In a number of cars the same lamp filament is used for both the brake lights and the turn signals. If the rear turn signals do not light, the bulbs are probably burned out. If the turn signals still light, the problem is the brake switch which supplies power to the lamps. If the brake switch is defective, none of the brake lights will work.

Simple answer - Yes

To test:

1. Remove the bulbs

2. The bulb will have two contacts on the base

3. Place one of the contacts on the positive battery terminal. Wiggle it around to ensure good contact [one terminal will illuminate the bulb brighter than the other. The brighter of the two is the brake light]

4. Place a jump wire from the negative terminal to the side of the light [just below the glass]

5. The bulb will light, if it doesn't, it's faulty

Never associate being a female with not knowing much about cars. Doesnt matter what sex you are. If you dont know, you dont know; if you do know, then you know.

Anyway,
It is possible for both bulbs to blow at the same time.
Which could mean bad wires...

Most likely your brake light switch/sensor is not working properly. It's located up under the dash at the top of the brake pedal.

Fuse or........ the brake light switch would cause both brake lights to go out. If this doesn't correct the problem make sure both bulbs are not blown!

I would deffenetly try to change the bulbs, because if it's not the bulbs or the fuse it's an electrical problem and that can be costly. are you sure you checked the right fuse? it really sounds like a fuse problem.

If they both go out at the same time and the fuse is good, then it indicates a wiring short.
