I recently moved into an older home. The stove in the house is really old and I was unable to find proper fitting drip pans to replace the original ones. Do I really need a drip pan when I am cooking? Is it safe to cook without them? What are they for?

Drip pans not only collect liquid, but reflect heat to cook more efficiently. Keep looking at home stores, dollar stores, flea markets, and junk yards. If you have to, cover your pans with aluminum foil or buy foil drip pans that fit under the burners until you can find new ones that fit.

Also, as stoves get older (especially if also an oven), thermostats drift. Our old oven is about 100 degrees too hot. If too old, I agree that it may be time to retire ole Bessie!

Make some out of aluminium foil or go to an Ace hardware store instead of wal mart

The drip pans are to prevent a grease build up and a grease fire

Yes, the pans are needed. Do not cook on burners that don,t have them or you will have a big mess on your hands. Take a sample pan and visit old type hardware stores and old type stove appliance stores where you will find helpful owners.

Buy a freakin' stove. Why would you use someone else's old crap? I'll bet you didn't even buy new toilet seats.
