1. To make themselves feel like they are smarterER than the person that they corrected.
2. It annoys them and they just have to correct it.
3. They just want the two points you get for answering a question.
4. If the person who asked the question is too lazy to spell right, than why can't the answerer be too lazy to answer it.

Because I'm Aspergic and my main obsession is being pedantic about spelling, grammar and punctuation. You should work with me - it gets really irritating then. I don't like doing it because I know it's not really laziness with everyone. Some people are dyslexic, others may have missed a lot of school for some reason or another. I don't correct the spelling of someone for whom it's not the first language.
Before anyone says that it's the standard of education they received at an inner city school. I went to what is in Sunderland considered to be a very rough school in a very rough area (Pennywell Comp. for anyone who knows the area). I have still been left with the reputation of being a swot.
Apart from anything else, there's a Spellcheck attached to this box. I may understand the question with bad spelling in it but it certainly takes away from the enjoyment of playing the game.
By the way, I don't work in an office, I'm a carer, they often joke that I'm the only one in the building who can spell diarrhoea. Just for a bit of a lark, I've used the spellcheck and apart from the place names, I have no misspellings. Surprise, surprise!
Another thing - sorry, I'm reading the other answers and getting on my soap box now - I don't feel superior, there are things I'm hopeless at and would hope when I get things wrong, someone would be polite enough to correct me. Being Aspergic, I have a serious lack of common sense that no amount of intellect can make up for. All my colleagues know this and when I make my regular faux pas, they tell me ... for which I thank them.

It isn't always easy to understand what people are asking. I have, more then once, got it completely wrong. It is bad manners not to attempt to write reasonable English and that includes spelling. Many of us are not English but it is the language we can communicate with on this site. I used to sit at my computer with an English dictionary until I realised there were no such words as spoken in many of the questions

For me, personally, it's annoying. It really annoys me when I see spelling mistakes or bad grammar, it shows a lack of education. It's even worse when they are trying to make a good point. It just ruins everything. I only point it out when it's really bad on Y!A because I see it so often that I'd be doing it all the time.

if you have been brought up thinking that being able to spell makes you superior you probably fell the need to point out other peoples faults? Or , it could be irritating for them to know that there is a spell check on Yahoo and people just can not be bothered to use it?

When a student points out an error on the board to the teacher, it is clearly to annoy him/her. However, I think that when people of equal standing like friends or co-workers (not like teacher and student) correct each other's spelling, not to be helpful, but in an antagonistic sort of way, that the corrector is acting self-important, as if being a spelling whiz makes them better than everyone else. I mean, spelling correctly doesn't make you a genius or anything.

I agree with you totally. I suppose that some people like to be over critical, and like to point out the fault of others. Some people just like to right about things (no matter how small or petty), even if no body else really cares what they have to say.

When someone has bad spelling and grammar the first thing that I think of is this person is not smart or they are too lazy. If you want the good answers to your questions then write it properly, I usually just don't even answer questions that are written like that except yours because you asked.

They dont have a suitable answer but want the two points anyway. Or they are one of those really pompous people that know the answer but wont tell you until 'you use the proper way of asking'
