Well there are a lot of vehicles now with safety features that lock you out of reverse when over a certain speed. Now if you did manage to shove it in reverse you would either blow your tranny from the shock or just lock up the tires, but either way I am sure you would do some serious tranny damage.

If the transmission is in great shape, it would slow down and start moving backward. However, you are putting incredible stress on the transmission. There's a fair chance that you would end up blowing a friction disk or gear, and you'd need a new transmission.

Your car would jerk and you'd hear a horrific grinding noise (at which you'd probably realize what you were doing and not proceed into the entire reverse gear). And then you're reverse transmission would be shot, at the least.

I had a 'ninety 3 Ford F-a hundred and fifty. The shifter became loose and had a marvelous type of play in it (which i ultimately fastened by using a Youtube vid). this might reason me to by risk positioned the truck in 2d instead of force. i became arising an interstate ramp one morning interior the rain and thought the subject became in 2d because of the fact it looked sluggish. I went to place it in force and by risk threw it into opposite. I did some 360s earlier coming to a end on the shoulder. in all risk might have ripped my transmission to products had the line no longer been moist. So yeah. i might say your transmission has some sort of fail-risk-free mechanism that saved you.

You couldn't put it into reverse while moving, you'd have to hit the break to get the shifter to move.
Hypothetically, lets say it could happen.. then you would probably drop your transmission, which is not cheap to get fixed.

I used to do it at about 10 mph and burn rubber baby.
But seriously your transmission would probably break your universal joint, causing your tailshaft to (maybe) dig into the ground making your car do a pretty pole vault. After that you will find religion and a cure for constipation very quickly.

in newer cars there is a safety to prevent it from shifting into reverse
in an older car is a different story ive seen transmissions litterally bust in half under the pressure and ive seen the driveline twist almost in half

for the person who said you couldnt shift into reverse, you most definitely could, you only have to hit the brake to shift the car out of park
